DOC NYC | All Riders
All Riders is an award-winning documentary short on the battle for accessibility in the New York City subway told by those fighting it.
On January 28th, 22-year-old Malaysia Goodson was hauling her one-year-old daughter Rhylee in a stroller down a flight of subway stairs in Midtown Manhattan. Like 75% of the subway stations in New York City, there were no elevators for Goodson to take. Malaysia died tumbling down the stairs. Rhylee survived. The shockwaves of this incident rippled across disabled communities in New York who vowed to bring justice to Goodson.
All Riders is a documentary short that thrusts its viewers on the frontlines of the disability rights movement in New York City. Following one of its leaders Sasha Blair Goldensohn, co-founder of the Elevator Action Group at Rise and Resist NY, we take a peek behind the curtain with those that expose and combat the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) repeated efforts to deny its disabled riders fair and equal access to public transportation.
Granted unparalleled access to the heart of the battle for accessibility in New York City Transit, key subjects include NY State Assembly Member Harvey Epstein, Former Head of Accessibility NYC Transit Alex Elegudin, and family of Malaysia Goodson: Tamika Goodson and Dontaysia Turner. All Riders presents a microcosmic view of this long-standing fight for civil rights between the city’s largest minority group and the secretive conglomerate; the MTA.
